Megalonyx jeffersonii, ( Sloth Skull )
Age: Pleistocene
Location: West Virginia
Size: 11" x 9" x 6 1/2"
Cost: $375
Item #  mam/slothsk-bsr375/rg

FYI:
President, Thomas Jefferson, scientifically described fossil bones given to him by saltpeter miners found in a Monroe County cave in 1797. Jefferson thought they were the claws of a giant cat. In 1799 Casper Wistar re-described the bones as a new species of extinct giant ground sloth and named it in honor of President Jefferson. Only recently have the bones been Carbon 14 dated at over 38,000 year old.

On March 8, 2008 Megalonyx jeffersoni became the official state fossil of West Virginia. The idea of a WV State Fossil was the brain child of Ray Garton, a geologist and paleontologist from Fairmont, WV. Ray had the vision and wrote the resolution, but he had the assistance of many people in making the idea a reality. Ray’s colleagues, were his sounding board and support system through several years of trial and error. These people include his wife Mary Ellen, Fred Grady, Hassan Amjad, Robert Pyle, and Dave Phillips. When the idea was put before the legislature it was Delegate Mike Burdiss (Wyoming County) that took the reins and held to a steady course seeing it through to the successful end that we celebrate here today. Last, but certainly not least, other important legislative assistance came from Senator Roman Prezioso (Marion County), Delegate Joe Talbott (Webster County) and Senator Jon Hunter (Monongalia County).

Megalonyx  jeffersoni  ( Sloth Claw )
Distal phalaynx  3rd claw from the left.

Age: Pleistocene
Location: Cromer Cave, West Virginia
Size:6"
Cost: $30
Item #  mam/slothclw-bsr-30rg

FYI: West Virginia legislators have made some of its bones the new official state fossil. The Megalonyx jeffersonii has quite a story.

In the 1790s, workers mining for saltpeter in a Monroe County limestone cave - in what was then western Virginia - discovered fossil bones that later ended up with President Thomas Jefferson. Serving at the time as vice president for John Adams, Jefferson presented the bones at a meeting of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia in 1797. He noted that the remains were found buried three feet deep in the cave. Jefferson considered the fossils fascinating and thought they belonged to a prehistoric lion. After all, the claws appeared large enough to squash basketballs, but Caspar Wistar, a physician and anatomist, deflated Jefferson's theory and identified it as a ground sloth from the North American Ice Age. Ground sloth's died out as late as 1550. This particular species of ground sloth was the largest known of the Megalonyxe's. When fully grown, they were about the size of an ox and weighed 800 pounds. The sloth had a snout, peg-like teeth and a stout tail.  Though Jefferson was wrong about the bones, he is still credited for their discovery, hence the fossil name, Megalonyx jeffersonii - or "Jefferson's giant claw." His speech in Philadelphia also marked the beginning of vertebrate paleontology in North America.

Darwinius masillae  [ Missing Link ]
Age: Eocene.
Location: Messel, Germany.
Size: 8" 16"
Cost: $250
Item #  mam/darwin-bsr250rg

Note:
This specimen is a sculpture based on the original specimen of Darwinius masillae.

The only known specimen of Darwinius masillae, dubbed Ida, was discovered in 1983 at the Messel pit, a disused shale quarry noted for its astonishing fossil preservation, near the village of Messel, about 35 km (22 mi) southeast of Frankfurt am Main in Germany. The fossil, divided into a slab and partial counterslab after the amateur excavation and sold separately, was not reassembled until 2007. The fossil is of a juvenile female, approximately 58 cm (23 in) overall length, with the head and body length excluding the tail being about 24 cm (9.4 in). It is estimated that Ida died at about 80–85% of her projected adult body and limb length.

Darwinius masillae, Ida the missing link  is thought to be the ancestor fossil of all Apes and Humans.

FYI:  The finding of this fossil and her story was aired on TV in June of 2009 on the Discovery Channel and was named Ida for the daughter of the paleontologist that bought and cleaned her bones.

Stegodon

Stegodon are one of the largest of extinct elephants species (Proboscidean) with adults
being 13 feet high at the shoulder, 26 feet long, not including 10 foot long nearly straight tusks. The genus Stegodon, (from Greek stegos: meaning roof, and odon: meaning tooth, referring to the step ridges on the molar tooth) has its origins in the late Miocene of Asia and belongs to the family Stegodontidae. There are 6 recognized species. Stegodons probably originated from Gomphothierium, and developed into a new direction with increase molar size and ridge-like dental features. The tusks were so close together that the trunk probably did not lay between them but instead draped over. Stegodon moved into Africa in the Pliocene and is regarded as the ancestor to present day elephants, as well as the extinct mammoths. The oldest finds of Stegodon are found in Asia and are dated to about 10 millions years (Late Miocene) but may have persisted to as recently as 15,000 years ago. Stegodon diet consists of branches and foliage of trees. This skeletal cast presented is among the largest known.

Stegodon aurorae (The Japanese Akebono elephant)

Mammoths belong to the order Proboscidea, which also includes the American Mastodon and the African and Indian Elephant. The larger species of Mammoth, which appeared about 4 MYA, became extinct about 10,000 years ago, while some of the smaller species existed until about 4,000 years ago. The specimen here is a Woolly Mammoth discovered in Alaska. The Woolly Mammoth is well-studied, as several well-preserved specimens have been found; it also appears in cave paintings. The Woolly Mammoth was similar in size and height to the Indian Elephant but had a distinctive slope to its back as a result of its relatively shorter hind legs. Its long thick black hair and under wool give rise to its name. Its tusks, which they may have used to dig through the snow to get to vegetation, measured up to 13 feet and are actually very long incisors that continued to grow throughout the Mammoth's life. Its teeth also appear to have been specially adapted to the frozen tundra, with a greater number of plates and a higher crown than the teeth of other Mammoths. Chosen for its quality and size, our specimen was probably a female. The smaller size makes it more manageable for teaching as well as exhibits. We are grateful to the Babiarz Institute of Paleontological Studies for the opportunity to cast this individual. The custom Display Stand as shown S-BC-159 is available separately.
